Description:
The project of the City and University Library Frankfurt am Main includes the security filming of 50,000 to 70,000 historical photos from German colonial history. The images are generally accessible via a research database on the Internet. The collection of the DKG was organized according to a uniform concept. At first, it provided very differentiated information about the sponsors and activities of the German colonial movement and then mainly documented general and, in particular, German colonial history. In the more extensive regional section, all areas in which the German Reich pursued colonial interests are dealt with, i. e. in:
  1. Togo
  2. Cameroon
  3. Namibia / German South West Africa
  4. Tanzania / German East Africa
  5. Rwanda / German East Africa
  6. Burundi / German East Africa
  7. PRC v Kiautschou (Tsingtau)
  8. Papua New Guinea / Kaiser-Wilhelmsland
  9. Palau / Karolinen
  10. Federation of Micronesia / Caroline Islands
  11. Northern Mariana Islands (USA) / Mariana Islands
  12. Marshall-Islands
  13. Nauru
  14. West Samoa / German Samoa
Also worth mentioning are the settlements of Germans in Latin America (e. g. Blumenau) or Australia. The main topics are discovery and research trips, geology and mining, vegetation and local agriculture, landscapes and animal studies, settlement activities of locals and whites, school and mission, traditional trade and transport, introduction of modern means of transport (port facilities, railways, roads), economic development by Europeans, protection troops and uprisings, discovery and research trips. In addition, the same topics are presented as examples for colonies of other countries in Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania.
German Colonial Encyclopedia 1920
The German Colonial Encyclopedia was founded on the outbreak of the First World War. The first volume should be out now. After the war, the encyclopedia was published without any changes, as re-editing would have resulted in high costs and further delays. In the now available digitized form, the original was also adopted unchanged.
